Rich in tradition – as one of the oldest wineproducing establishments in Austria, Stift Göttweig has certainly earned this descriptor. Its roots can be traced back to the year 1083 AD, when its vineyards were already referenced in the abbey’s charter.

The soils of the Göttweiger Berg are highly diverse. They range from loam, loess, local conglomerate and chalky clay to primeval rock and weathered slate.

Thus it is not surprising that, in this region with such a longstanding tradition of viticulture, optimal partnerships between grape varieties and vineyard sites have evolved. The varietal distribution of our 26 hectares under vines comprises 60% Grüner Veltliner, 30% Riesling, 4% Chardonnay and 6% Pinot Noir. The most important vineyard sites are Gottschelle, Silberbichl and Göttweiger Berg.

A Traditional Wine Estate

The wineproducing estate Stift Göttweig is also a member of the noble association Traditionsweingüter Österreich (Association of Austrian Traditional Wine Estates). This organisation was founded in 1992 with the purpose of classifying the outstanding vineyard sites of the Danube region. Further information can be found at www.traditionsweingueter.at.

Philosophy

Fritz Miesbauer and his team cultivate the vine and produce wines for people who appreciate competence and quality, and for whom the visual image also matters. Our product ‘wine’ is considered by the team to be a work of artisanal excellence linking together the winery, the sites, the cellar work and the estate’s visual expression.
